Chapter Sixteen

Discovery

“Okay, Cameron, this is the last of it,” Mame handed me a thin packet of documents. “I’m sorry it isn’t very much.”

I reached for the manila folder from my sitting position on the floor of my room, my back against the bed.

“That’s okay, I’ll take anything at this point,” I said gratefully.

“And here, we made muffins,” Mame handed me a fat blueberry muffin, split open and slathered with butter, on a napkin. Steam rose from the delectable treat’s interior.

“Mmm, thanks.” My mouth watered.

It had been a few days since the attack on the street, and my wrist was all healed up. Tracker had explained how I should be healing much faster than normal, but I was still getting used to it.

“Did you finish your homework?” Mame asked, leaning on the doorway.

“All done and ready for class tomorrow.” I motioned behind me on the bed. “The essay was tricky, but I got it done.”

“Good,” Mame said. “I still think you should apply for those grants and scholarships, Cameron.”

“Oh, I think so, too. I’m going to be filling all that out next month.”

Mame grinned. “Your new friends help convince you?”

I nodded. “I think it helps they’ve got a doctor and a nurse in the family. They kind of adore higher education, and it’s rubbing off.”

“It’s your dream,” said Mame. “And you should always go after your dreams. Always.”

I smiled at her and opened the folder she had given me.

“Well, I’ll leave you to it.” She moved to close the door.

“Thanks again!” I idly nibbled on the crust of the muffin.

The folder contained very little information. My mother had been a teenager, and they weren’t even sure of her age. One note said she was fifteen and another that she had told them she was sixteen. I looked at every slip of paper in the folder, and had lifted a half sheet with scribbled notes from an intake worker when my eyes fell on the next bit of paper and I gasped. I froze and then slowly moved to take up the small Polaroid photo that lay in my lap.

It was her. I knew it. I felt it in my bones. She had my eyes and the same slant on her nose. I lifted the photograph to my face.

My heart!

She was a tiny thing, barely five feet high. She had a smattering of freckles across her face, high cheekbones, and short hair that wisped every which way. And she looked no older than thirteen.

Her frame was thin: She looked like she might blow away in a stiff wind. She wore a shirt and pants that looked too big for her, as if they had come out of a donation bin. And an army jacket that looked like it was going to swallow her whole.

Her eyes looked out of the photograph at me, and I stared at the face, not blinking. Not moving. Not even breathing.

I wanted to reach into the picture and touch her.

Touch my mother.

I lightly drew my fingertip down the side of her arm, imagining being a newborn and being held against her.
